Charles O. King, AIA
President

Since founding Charles King Architects in 1986 (Now King Design Group), Mr. King has been involved with national and international projects, some exceeding $60 million in construction cost.

Mr. King holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture and Planning from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition, he frequently attends continuing education seminars and lectures that keep him current with present and future needs relating to the design profession.

Mr. King serves on the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Tennessee, and he is a past president of the Chattanooga Chapter of AIA. At home, he is also involved in the Rotary Club and Friends of the Festival.



Robert B. Richardson
Project Manager

Mr. Richardson has been involved in a variety of projects including tenant “build-outs” of retail shops in major shopping malls, free standing pharmacies, hospitality and condominium projects, and institutional roofing projects.

He has a special interest in roofing projects and has designed for different roofing systems including EPDM, modified bitumen, standing seam, concrete over-burden, and patio roofs. Mr. Richardson has experience in hotel/motel design with most major franchisers, having worked on projects ranging from three-story to high-rise, with designs including wood and metal stud, CMU and post-tensioned concrete, and values of up to $12 million.

Mr. Richardson has attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He made a major career change in 1991, moving from a twenty-year career in television and radio broadcasting to architecture.



Valerie V. Melcher

Projects Ms. Melcher has worked on include the Corbin Factory Stores, Erlanger Women’s East Medical Facility, Kanpai of Tokyo, the Dixie Carter Retreat, and various individual residences. She holds a Bachelors degree in Interior Design from University of Georgia, and has over twelve years of interior design experience, including project management, interior design, space planning, and cost estimating.

She is currently finishing her B.A. in English from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

Stephen K. (Steve) Harris

Mr. Harris’ experience includes work on the Hilton Garden Inn, Island Royale Condominium, and the E & K Business Center. He has over ten years of experience in the operation of Computer Aided Drafting systems. He is currently operating our Auto Cad system and is responsible for project production.

Carol S. Ward
Architectural Technician

Ms. Ward has been involved in roofing projects including the Hillcrest Elementary School, Howard High School, Chattanooga School of the Liberal Arts, and the Dalewood Elementary School. Ms. Ward also gained experience working on the Olan Mills, Inc design project. Her experience includes project management of roofing projects, seven years of AutoCAD drafting, and exposure to various architectural projects.
